Inspections

Thermal power station put to the test
According to the local press, the Siempelkamp Prüf- und Gutachter-Gesellschaft (SPG) in Saxony “took a critical look at the city’s furnace” in spring 2013: the Dresden-based Siempelkamp subsidiary inspected the entire pressurized plant in unit C of the Chemnitz thermal power station. Where otherwise hot fires of more than 1,000°C are blazing to provide the citizens of the city with heat and power, the inside and outside of pipes and turbines had to report for a check-up.

A planned shutdown to increase safety and reliability
Every five years, as stipulated by the legislative body, refineries and large chemical plants are put to the test. Production comes to a standstill, cleaning and maintenance tasks are carried out, and the Technical Inspection Agency as well as other inspection agencies test machinery and equipment for safety and integrity. In May 2008, TOTAL Raffinerie Mitteldeutschland GmbH was up for such an inspection. The refinery, which is located in Leuna, Central Germany, refines approximately 10% of the crude oil needed in Germany into mineral oil products. During the inspection, Siempelkamp Prüf- und Gutachter-Gesellschaft Dresden (SPG) was solely responsible for the
condition assessment and the lifetime monitoring of important components including the process facilities, reactors, containers, controls and instruments, and pipelines of a total of eight production lines.

Materials testing

Material inspection for the Soyuz creates that astronaut feeling
Sometimes the stars are within reach, even for inspectors and expert consultants. The order to perform a material inspection on the famous Soyuz 29 capsule fulfills a childhood dream for the team at Siempelkamp Prüf- und Gutachter-Gesellschaft in Dresden, Germany: getting a taste of that cosmonaut feeling!

New materials for the 700 °C power plant
Siempelkamp Prüf- und Gutachter-Gesellschaft mbH (SPG) is part of the Siempelkamp Group in the field of nuclear technology. The company, located in Dresden, has been the specialist for industrial services in the fields of strength calculations and testing of materials and components with an emphasis on creep-resistant materials for more than 50 years. In an interview with Dr. Andreas Thomas, Managing Director of SPG, Bulletin found out more about the company’s portfolio and potential.

Siempelkamp gives the “green light” for pumped-storage power plants
The accelerated phasing out of nuclear energy in Germany has been decided – a radical change with regard to power supply is the consequence. What will the energy mix of tomorrow be made up of? Pumped-storage power plants will play an important role here and breathe fresh life into the almost forgotten power source of “hydroelectric power”. Here, Siempelkamp demonstrates its testing and surveying expertise, as a glance at Saxony illustrates.
